Apprenticeship details

The Heavy Vehicle Service & Maintenance Technician apprenticeship equips learners with the core skills, knowledge, and behaviours required for a successful career.

What it covers:

This apprenticeship is suitable for a wide range of individuals, including school leavers, career changers, and those already working in the automotive sector who wish to formalise their skills and advance their careers.

Apprentices will complete the following units as part of their qualification: 

  • The fundamentals of HV technologies e.g. HV chassis design, engine, fuels, transmissions, electrical (12/24v), air-conditioning, hydraulic and air braking, air suspension systems, etc
  • The types and associated characteristics of HV’s and their configurations and applications
  • Diagnosing principles and logical problem-solving techniques related to HV.
  • Sufficient H&S knowledge and environmental awareness to carry out the work safely
  • Operators “O” Licence requirements relating to HVs
  • How to service, inspect, and maintain vehicles and trailers to the expected standards and the importance of safety inspection and maintenance schedules to meet Operator’s (O) licence and legal obligations
  • Customer expectations and implications of work carried out
  • How the business works from an operational perspective and demonstrate commercial and financial awareness in the HV industry
  • Complex problem-solving techniques
  • The requirements for providing roadside assistance

Delivery 

Our Skills Development Tutors will visit apprentices on-site or remotely, working with them to meet employer’s specific needs and expectations. 

Attendance is required 1 day per week at the Greater Manchester SkillCentre in Trafford Park.

Entry requirements 

There are no formal entry requirements however, apprentices will need to attend an informal interview. If apprentices do not hold the relevant English and maths qualifications, they will work towards them as part of this programme.
